Orallift is a specially fitted mouthpiece designed to be worn for a couple of hours, three times a week, to shift the position of the jaw. The device realigns facial muscles, with minimum discomfort, to give “the illusion of a facelift, but without a knife in sight”.

It is claimed to give a firmer jaw line, lifted eye area, fuller lips and brighter skin. Though not everyone in the industry is convinced. “If you have intensive orthodontic treatment, you can certainly reposition the jaw,” says Rajiv Grover, a consultant plastic surgeon. “But to say you can reverse loss of height in the jawbone by wearing a mouthpiece for a few hours a day is adventurous.”

FDA Approval of JUVÉDERM(R) XC Dermal Filler Formulated with Lidocaine

Allergan, Inc. announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of JUVÉDERM(R) XC, a new formulation of the currently FDA-approved JUVÉDERM(R) dermal filler and the latest advancement in hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers. Allergan’s new JUVÉDERM(R) formulation contains the local anesthetic lidocaine to provide patients with enhanced comfort during treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the nasolabial folds (or “parentheses”) that appear around the nose and mouth. JUVÉDERM(R) is the first and only hyaluronic acid dermal filler approved by the FDA to last up to one year from initial treatment and number-one selling hyaluronic acid dermal filler.

The JUVÉDERM(R) XC formulation with 0.3% preservative-free lidocaine numbs the treatment area within seconds, potentially reducing the need for an additional anesthetic. JUVÉDERM(R) XC provides the same smooth, long-lasting results as demonstrated with existing formulations of JUVÉDERM(R), and now offers a more comfortable injection experience and potentially less time spent in the physician’s office when compared to the non-lidocaine JUVÉDERM(R) formulation.

“Patients want a smooth and natural-looking result from a dermal filler treatment, but as a physician I am also interested in managing my patient’s discomfort during the injection. Before the introduction of JUVÉDERM(R) XC it often took up to 30 minutes for an anesthetic block to take effect. In the clinical trial leading up to the FDA approval, patients reported they experienced less pain with JUVÉDERM(R) XC, compared to their previous dermal filler treatment without lidocaine. So with the new formulation, patients can receive the same smooth results as demonstrated with JUVÉDERM(R) but enjoy a more comfortable injection experience,” said Charles Boyd, M.D., Boyd Cosmetic Surgical Institute and JUVÉDERM(R) XC clinical investigator.

L’Oreal claims it could turn grey hair back to it’s original colour

L’Oreal, the world’s largest cosmetics and beauty company, claims it could halt and potentially reverse going grey.

Dye could become a denizen of the past as hair is restored to it’s natural and younger colour and, scientists believe, will be a product available as an oral pill backed up by haircare products.

According to the experts at Centre Charles Zviak, L’Oreal’s research and development HQ, it is science and by no means fiction. Scientists working there have identified a pair of genes that may play a key role in turning hair grey. If the company’s plans come good, going grey will one day be a thing of the past and available within a decade.

Patricia Pineau, L’Oreal’s Research Communications Director, said: “Hair is an enigma,

“It is a fibre, a material with physical properties. It is also a living organ that grows, greys and falls out. How can we fight this? Do we need a physical approach or a biological approach?”

L’Oreal has put it’s money where it’s mouth is, putting some £581 million last year into research.

Hair, like skin, contains melanocytes, pigment cells that give it colour.

Palomar debuts cosmetic laser devices

Palomar Medical Technologies, developer of light-based systems for laser plastic surgery and cosmetic treatments, unveiled four new devices during the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) annual meeting (San Francisco, CA), which concluded yesterday. The new instruments target deep skin resurfacing, wrinkle treatment, hair removal, and body sculpting (“laser liposuction”); Palomar expects to begin shipments this Spring.

The new the XD Optic, designed for use with the StarLux 500 laser and pulsed-light system, attaches easily to the Lux1440 and Lux1540 fractional non-ablative laser handpieces, Palomar says. The XD Optic provides deeper columns of micro-damage for deeper skin treatments. Palomar plans to seek FDA clearance for this device and will begin shipping upon approval.

Palomar designed its GROOVE Optic, for use with the Lux2940 fractional ablative laser, to provide lines of fractional ablation. The Groove Optic promises results approaching the gold standard full-surface ablation treatment but with the minimal downtime of a fractional treatment. By changing the shape of the micro areas of ablative damage from “dot” to “line”, the pattern of treatment can now be correlated with that of wrinkles. With multiple passes, a faster, more uniform coverage can also be realized. The Lux2940 is FDA cleared for skin resurfacing and treatment of wrinkles, rhytides, furrows, fine lines, textural irregularities, pigmented lesions, and vascular dyschromia. Palomar plans to begin shipping the GROOVE Optic this Spring.

The LuxPowR intense pulsed-light handpiece brings permanent hair reduction to a new level, without sacrificing comfort, Palomar claims. Capitalizing on the StarLux 500’s increased power and cooling, the LuxPowR’s optical train generates fluence up to a 100 J/cm2. An efficient cooling system and advanced optical filtration are provided for patient comfort and safety. Palomar plans to begin shipments this Spring.
